About Checkmate Club
Checkmate Fight Club Malta first opened its doors on 13th January 2014. Despite the fact that the club is still in it's early years, the talent and dedication of Sensei Charlo Spiteri is already being well reflected on his students. We are team consisting of over eighty members which together train to get further in MMA and Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitions.
With the help of our professional instructors Sensei Charlo and Assistant Coach Vince Galea anyone can get the results they are aiming for. We are open for beginners and professional athletes. We build complete fighters in all areas of MMA, Kickboxing striking for MMA, Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), groundwork and Wrestling takedowns. Apart from techniques which are extremely important we also focus on intense physical fitness training and character building of our fighters. We also aim to provide a safe and health environment for everyone who wishes to join our classes. We are there for everyone, anyone who wishes to learn the art of self defense and combat sports for those who want to do physical training and get in shape in a fun environment. We also have specially designed training programs for athletes who are willing to take it to the next level and compete from armature to professional levels in MMA locally and abroad.
After the first year from it`s opening Checkmate already had a fighter ready to taking up a UK semi professional competition held by Battle Arena. Our fighter did not win his fight as his opponent had sixteen years experience and our athlete had just started his training. However that did not stop our fighting spirit after a few months we appeared again at Battle Arena with four fighters. They made name of our Maltese flag and our GYM up there and came back with three wins.
A year on we competed again in Battle Arena with two new fighters who had less than a year of experience and came back with one win during the first round of the bout.
During the first two years there were also a number of amateur competitions held in Malta in which we had four fighters taking part in. We won three fights out of four, most of them during the first round.
Now there are also opportunities to go professional in Malta. We take part in the Centurion Fighting Championship an international professional competition which is being held in Malta. On 13 May 2017 we had a fighter competing as a professional for the first time. He was against another fighter with six records as professional. The fight ended up in a draw but it was still a great result for our fighter and he also gained a lot of experience from this fight.
In November 2018 Checkmate signed a contract with one of the most successful MMA federation in Canada,TKO MMA events. From this federation athletes are selected to sign contacts UFC. Marilyn Micallef was the first Maltese Women athlete to step in Canada to compete in this MMA federation. Marilyn`s opponent was a highly experienced Canadian athlete and unfortunately we did not win this fight. Our athlete lost her fight during the third round but with a great performance.
In July 2019 eight students from Checkmate Fight Club competed in a very professional Jiu-Jitsu grappling competition which was held in Rome, Italy. Out athletes were awarded with three gold medals, four silver and a bronze medal.
We are proud of our students and the success that they are achieving. Our goal is to help them full fill their dreams and achieve as much experience as possible doing the sport that they love. We are willing to give as much opportunities as possible to our students in any level of MMA, Grappling and Jiu-Jitsu. We accompanied our athletes in offshore Semi Professional and Professional MMA competitions, local MMA competitions and also in local and oversea grappling and Jiu-Jitsu competitions and we are planning to keep on doing our job, as long as our students keep trusting us to train and shape them.
This is who we are, one big team with the love for MMA and Jiu-Jitsu. If you wish to find out more please feel free to contact us.
