Sensei Charlo Spiteri has over Twenty years experience in Japanese Ju-Jitsu | BJJ and MMA.
He has a varied background in martial arts including Kickboxing and Boxing but when he took on traditional and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu his passion for this sport grew as he trained.
Prior opening Checkmate he achieved his 1st Dan black belt under Sensei John Sevasta who has a 3rd Dan black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and a 2nd Dan black belt in Judo under his name. Additionally Sensei Charlo Spiteri also trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for more than four years under Master Roger Gracie who teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at his academy in London UK. Charlo achieved his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Roger Gracie (Team Nas Alganga). During the course of his training, he was also awarded a green belt in kickboxing.
Charlo has also experienced tournament and competitions first hand. His first competition was in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where he placed second in a tournament held in Italy. His second competition was an international world MMA Tournament held in Italy where again he placed second.
In the present day he focus his energy on his students and athletes. He makes his utmost to create the best environment, where anyone can learn the art of self defense and motivating his students to getting in shape and make training part of their life style. He promotes the message that athletes and non-athletes train side by side as one big team. Always teaching his students that the most experienced of athletes can sometimes learn the best lessons from a beginner.
